ABRAMS Released a Record — Then the World Shut Down | Zach Amster on COVID & Modern Ways
May 1, 2026
ABRAMS guitarist and vocalist Zach Amster on what it was like
to release a record and then watch the entire music industry
shut down almost immediately after — and what that experience
meant for the band, their momentum, and ultimately how they
approached making their next record.
Modern Ways came out in 2020. The timing couldn't have been
harder. The tours didn't happen, the shows didn't happen, and
a record the band had worked toward for years went out into
the world at exactly the moment the world stopped being able
to engage with it the way music is meant to be engaged with
— live, in a room, with other people.
Zach talks about navigating that experience, what it did to
the band's process and mindset, and how coming out the other
side of it shaped the urgency and intensity that went into
making Loon — ABRAMS' new album out now on Blues Funeral
Recordings.
It's a story a lot of bands lived through during that period,
