Every guitar they owned in the room. Amps and cabinets everywhere. Pedals everywhere. Mattresses leaned against the cabinets down the hall. No control room. No isolation booth. No silent room to listen back in. The only way to know if a take was good was to stop, rewind the tape, and listen. Drums and bass were tracked live at Dockside Studio in Maurice, Louisiana on a vintage Neve console — cut simultaneously in the room the way it has to be done with a drummer like Stanton Moore. Guitar was recorded at Barry Gibb's private studio. Everything else happened at Pepper's Mississippi hideout with no clock, no hotel, and nobody telling them when to stop.
