Lighten Up — Music Isn't Science | Meeting Kindred Spirits at Rock Shows | The Sonic Road Podcast
May 8, 2026
Beau and returning guest Becky Franzel — Milwaukee author
and lifelong rock fan — on one of the best parts of going to
live shows: the strangers you meet who turn out to be your
people.
There's something that happens at a rock show that doesn't
happen many other places — you walk in not knowing anyone
and walk out with a conversation you'll remember, a
recommendation that changes what you listen to for the next
six months, or just the simple reminder that the music you
love is loved by a lot of other people too. The crowd isn't
just a crowd. It's a community that assembles and disperses
one show at a time.
Beau and Becky also touch on something worth saying out loud:
lighten up. Music is supposed to be fun. It's not science.
The gatekeeping, the genre arguments, the intensity of certain
fanbases — none of it serves the music. The whole point is to
enjoy it, share it, and find other people who feel the same way.
