What's Broken in Live Music — John Gist of Vegas Rock Revolution

Concert ticket prices are up 41% since 2019, tours are getting canceled across the country, and unsold seats are showing up on Ticketmaster maps everywhere you look. John Gist is building the opposite of all that. John is the founder of Vegas Rock Revolution and the creator and curator of Planet Desert Rock Weekend, which just wrapped its sixth edition and heads into its seventh in January 2027. He spent years running marketing departments for Marriott and Wyndham before walking away from the corporate world and putting everything into promoting heavy rock in Las Vegas. In this episode he gets into what is actually happening to live music right now and what he is doing about it. We start with the numbers. Pollstar data shows the average concert ticket went from about $96 in 2019 to nearly $136 by 2024. John breaks down where that money is going, why Ticketmaster and Live Nation function the way they do, the role artist management companies play, and why the bands themselves usually get blamed for prices they do not set. He also talks about why fewer and fewer companies controlling more and more of the industry is a problem no matter how you look at it, and why marketing spend is the difference between a band selling tickets and a band playing to twenty people. From there we get into Planet Desert Rock Weekend and the specific choices behind it. One stage, no overlapping sets, twenty minutes between bands, and full 45 to 60 minute sets so nobody flies across the world to play a half hour. Evening-only shows so people can spend the day in Vegas. John supplies the backline for the international bands, obsesses over sound quality, and books at The Usual Place at the lower end of Fremont Street so people can walk from their hotel. He also talks openly about losing tens of thousands of dollars on the second edition in 2019, rebuilding from the ground up at volume three with John Garcia and Nebula, and what he learned from all of it.
